Question

In fact, it is very convenient to install Synology DSM on ordinary computers. Recently, the XPE noboot forum released support for the latest DSM 6.1 boot program. Although the publisher said that it is a test version, after a period of time, the test has been found to be stable. Now simply write the tutorial. 


The most important thing to note is that
DSM 6.x bootstrap requires UEFI-supported motherboards . If it is an old motherboard, please install DSM 5.2 .

Where to install the system? 
The key problem is that DSM adopts a structure in which the system and data are separated. That is, the boot system needs to be installed on a single device, usually a U disk/SD/TF card or an SSD disk. Data needs to be additionally installed on a separate hard disk. 

Boot system installation media ----- Whether it is a U disk or TF card, in fact 128MB or more is sufficient, USB 2.0/3.0 can be recommended SanDisk cool beans series of small U disk. 
Data storage hard disk ---- mechanical hard disk or solid-state hard disk can be, this is no limit, of course, the larger the better the capacity. 


Modify the boot loader configuration file
First, we can use ChipEasy chip worry Finding VID and PID U disk. 
For example, the following figure shows that the VID of this U disk is 0930 and the PID is 6544. 
Please record these two values. The following configuration file needs to be used.




In addition, the new DSM 6.x configuration file and the previous XPEnoboot configuration file are not the same, we can open the img through the OSFMount virtual drive software and then modify.

installation is complete, run OSFMount 
Click on the lower left corner - Mount new, select the downloaded img image. 
(Note: The img mirror directory must be English or numeric, not Chinese.)


Select Partition 0, click OK and 


tick the Read-only drive option below. 


Double-click the image in OSFMount to open the grub directory and edit the grub.cfg file. It is 


recommended to use EditPlus to edit the grub.cfg file. 


This is done according to your own requirements.

set pid = 0x6387 U disk PID entity machine must be modified, the virtual machine does not need to modify 
set sn = A8ODN02468 serial number can not modify 
set mac1 = 0011322CA603 mac address can Do not modify

Fill in the correct U disk VID and PID can hide the U disk in the DSM interface, modify the sn and mac address can be used to "wash white" 
Note: 0x vid and pid do not modify, only need to modify the 4 behind the


modification is complete, click Dismount All & Exit 



Make Boot U Disk
Run the Win32 Disk Imager Disk Image Tool as shown below.

1, first in the right side of the software interface (Device) Select the U disk drive letter. 
(It is recommended to remove all other USB storage devices before operation to prevent selection errors leading to data loss from other USB flash drives or removable hard drives). 

2. Click the blue folder icon to the right of the image file (Image File) and select the previously downloaded synoboot.img file. 

3, then click Write again.

Start installation
1, insert the U disk, and set the default boot from the U disk on the motherboard, the specific settings, please search for related methods. 
2. Select the first DS3617xs 6.1 Baremetal with Jun's Mod v1.02-alpha by default after booting from the U disk. 



3, prompted Booting the kernel wait 1-2 minutes and then enter http://find.synology.com/ inside the browser , search for DSM, if not found, then use SynologyAssistant to find the macOS version of the 
Windows 
version of the

4. According to the prompts, click Manual installation and select the previously downloaded pat file, and then click Install Now.
